Security Tips for Using a Bank Card
Take a few minutes to read our bank card security recommendations
General Recommendations
- Sign the signature panel on the back of your card immediately after receiving it from the Bank.
- Change your initial PIN at an ATM and memorise it. Do not write it on your card or on any other medium.
- Change your PIN regularly, preferably at least once a month.
- Protect your card from damage – do not expose it to prolonged sunlight, extreme temperatures or magnetic fields.
- Do not allow anyone else to use your card. Do not share your card details with relatives, acquaintances or friends.
- Do not disclose your card information (number, CVV or expiry date) to third parties by email, telephone or online forms.
- Familiarise yourself with your card's transaction limits. Do not request higher limits unless necessary.
- Monitor activity on your bank accounts regularly using SMS/email notifications (D Info) and Internet banking (DBank Online).
- Review your transactions regularly and contact the Bank immediately if you see an unrecognised transaction.
- Review your monthly statements regularly. If you notice any irregularities or stop receiving them, call the Bank.
- Call the Bank immediately if your card is lost or stolen.
Online Payments
- Register your card for the Mastercard ID Check service free of charge.
- Look for retailers displaying the Mastercard ID Check logo. Check that the website is secure by looking for the padlock icon in the address bar.
- Shop only with reputable, well-known online retailers.
- Use secure websites whose addresses begin with https://.
- Protect your device by installing reliable antivirus software and updating it regularly.
- Configure your browser not to remember usernames, passwords or your card details.
- Never provide card details unless you are placing an order for goods or services.
- Keep your correspondence with the retailer and information relating to the purchase.
- Do not make payments from public computers. Avoid public Wi-Fi networks.
- Never provide your PIN for online transactions – it is required only at ATMs and POS terminals.
- Read the terms of sale: delivery time, warranty, cancellation rights and additional charges.
- Be cautious with offers of free products – if they are free, card details should not be required.
- Save the electronic payment receipt – it may be useful if you need to dispute the transaction.
- Keep your email account secure and never send card details by email.
- Never respond to requests for card or account details by email or telephone. The Bank, Mastercard and BORICA never request such information.
Payments at a POS Terminal
- Shop at reputable retailers.
- Use your card's contactless functionality.
- Do not hand your card to a member of the retailer's staff – carry out the transaction at the terminal yourself.
- Do not leave your card unattended while making a payment.
- Make sure no one can see your PIN while you enter it.
- Before paying, check that the amount on the terminal screen matches the amount actually due.
- Check the amount on the POS receipt before signing it. Do not sign receipts showing a different amount or no amount.
- Keep your purchase receipts safe.
- Remember to take your card back after paying.
- If you leave your card with a retailer, call 0700 40400 immediately to block it.
ATM Transactions
- Never disclose your PIN to third parties.
- Change your PIN immediately if you suspect it has been disclosed.
- Have your card ready in advance and make sure no one is watching you.
- Do not use ATMs in poorly lit locations. Where possible, withdraw cash from machines located inside bank branches.
- Use the same trusted terminal regularly. Avoid unfamiliar machines.
- Inspect the ATM – if it looks unusual or suspicious, use another machine.
- Check the card slot and inspect it for any unusual attached devices.
- Follow the ATM instructions exactly. Do not allow strangers to distract you.
- Make sure the cash dispensed matches the amount requested. If there is a discrepancy, call 0700 40400.
- If your card is retained, call 0700 40400 immediately to block it. Do not trust strangers.
- If you are in doubt, press CANCEL immediately and end the transaction.

Activate SMS/email notifications for card transactions. The D Info provides useful information whenever an attempt is made to use your card.

If Your Card Is Lost or Stolen
If your card is lost or stolen, call immediately to block it at 0700 40 400 or 02/9702600.
